The EMS system in Alaska has the goal of reducing human suffering and financial loss due to untimely death and injuries that result in disabilities.
The Emergency Medical Services program in Alaska is comprised of both paid and volunteer emergency medical responders and EMT's and is divided into seven different regions. The state of Alaska has 4,000 plus EMTs, EMS Instructors, and Defibrillator Technicians. Additionally there are some 175 Mobile Intensive care Paramedics
Each Paramedic is licensed by the Department of Commerce and Economic Development while each EMT responder is certified by the Department of Health and Social Services (which governs the Emergency Medical Services Program).
