Iowa is one of the few states left that do not use the NREMT exam as basis for EMT and Paramedic certification. The state of Iowa has it's own written EMT and Paramedic practical exam that a candidate will have to pass in order to become certified. The Iowa Bureau of EMS will, however accept NREMT (National Registry) certification from another state as basis for reciprocity and certification. You will need to provide proof of your National Certification.

There are 19 EMS training programs in Iowa which are recognized by the Bureau of EMS. Each of these courses provides the necessary EMT and Paramedic course material and length required for EMT or Paramedic certification in Iowa.
