I gave and answer to this question and this is the answer I got in response. Incomprehensible sounds gives a 2 and Incomprehensible words gives a 3. I believe I am correct and this is serious business. If the site is wrong, how many other answers are they giving that are wrong? Any thoughts on this and what the correct answer is for this question!

40. Your patient is a 62 y/o female with a history of brain cancer. Currently she is unconscious. She has no response to verbal stimuli, makes incomprehensible words, and withdraws from pain. What is her GCS?

Your Answer: 8

Incorrect

Correct Answer is: 7

Other answers:

5

10

Rationale: No response receives 1, incomprehensible words receives 2, and withdrawal from pain receives 4, for a total of 7.

In the future we ask that you post any questions you have about test questions, answers, or rationales in our help desk area. This allows our staff to review and answer your questions quickly.

Now to answer your question.

Incomprehensible sounds or words are the same thing. It means there is no articulated speech and it is rated at a 2. If the patient has inappropriate words (they are speaking a proper word/words but not using them correctly in a sentence structure, then they get the score of 3. I hope this helps clarify a little better.

While we don't claim infallibility on our test questions, answers, and rationales, we are very certain that our database is very close to perfect. We are always willing to review and discuss any question that a user brings to us, and correct anything that is not correct. Our questions are based on national standards and are designed to prepare you to succeed on your NREMT examination. Your success is our ultimate goal. So please utilize our help desk to get quick access to our technicians who are all practicing EMS providers around the country.

Thank you for using our website.

Sincerely,

Scott
